Oil Seal Material Comparison Table
Material | Abbr. | Full Name | Main Characteristics | Common Applications |
Nitrile Rubber | NBR | Nitrile Butadiene Rubber | Good oil resistance, abrasion resistance, cost-effective | General oil seals, automotive, hydraulic systems |
Fluorocarbon Rubber | FKM / FPM | Fluorocarbon Rubber | High temperature and chemical resistance | Engines, chemical plants, high-temp seals |
Silicone Rubber | VMQ | Vinyl Methyl Silicone | Excellent low/high temp flexibility, low oil resistance | Food machinery, medical devices, low-temp uses |
Hydrogenated Nitrile Rubber | HNBR | Hydrogenated Nitrile Rubber | Better oil & heat resistance, high mechanical strength | Engines, compressors, high-pressure seals |
EPDM Rubber | EPDM | Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer | Excellent weather, water, steam resistance, poor oil resistance | Brake systems, water seals, outdoor use |
PTFE | PTFE | Polytetrafluoroethylene | Chemical inertness, low friction, high-temp resistant | Chemical plants, high-speed shafts, dry running |
Polyurethane | PU | Polyurethane | Superior abrasion & tear resistance, high pressure resistance | Hydraulic cylinders, pneumatic tools, construction equipment |
Thermoplastic Elastomer | TPE | Thermoplastic Elastomer | Rubber-like elasticity with plastic processability | Dust seals, auto parts, sports gear |
Polyoxymethylene | POM | Polyoxymethylene | High strength, wear resistance, low friction | Gears, seals, valve parts |
PEEK | PEEK | Polyether Ether Ketone | High-temp (up to 260°C), chemical resistance, superior strength | High-temp seals, aerospace, chemical sealing |
Material Selection Guide:
For high temperature or chemical resistance: Recommended materials are FKM, PTFE, and PEEK.
For low-temperature environments: VMQ (Silicone) and TPE are more suitable.
For pressure and wear resistance: PU and POM offer excellent performance.
For chemical plants and oil-free lubrication: PTFE and PEEK are ideal choices.
For applications requiring both heat and oil resistance: FKM (fluororubber) is recommended.
For general industrial oils and water: NBR is sufficient and cost-effective.
For steam or cooling water systems: EPDM should be used.
For extremely abrasive environments (e.g., hydraulic cylinders): PU is the preferred material.
